Frequently Asked
Questions

Making the decision to see a counsellor can sometimes be a daunting process. Let me help you by answering some of your questions below.

What is the difference between a clinical social worker and other counselling professionals?

There is a lot of overlap between clinical social workers, psychologists, and certified counsellors. All promote the health and well-being of the client and are wonderful options.

What sets social workers apart from other counselling professionals is that a key component to a social worker’s education and practice is examining how broader social factors and structural inequalities may play a role in a person’s concerns or issues. Principles of human rights and the pursuit of social justice are fundamental to social work and are a part of our code of ethics.

How long are your sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes long. The remaining 10 minutes of the hour are used for completing notes and ensuring that I am managing your file properly.

What are your hours?

I offer appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5 pm to 8 pm and on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Will you keep our sessions private and confidential?

Everything you say is kept confidential.

However, I am ethically bound to breach confidentiality if:

  • You or someone else’s life is in danger.

  • There is suspected or actual child abuse.

  • Information is subpoenaed in a court of law.

  • You experience a physical or psychological injury at work. A report to WCB is required according to provincial legislation.

How do I know who is the right counsellor for me?

You should feel comfortable with the counsellor’s general philosophy and approach to counselling, but ultimately you need to feel safe and connected with your counsellor. You need to be able to trust them and feel comfortable at all times.

Whether or not you choose to see me, you should feel supported by your counsellor.
